Huck House Youth Award Winners: Rose and Lachelle

Meet Rose

Rose came to Huckleberry House after being kicked out by her mother. She has managed to be resilient and independent early in life. Rose gets up every day and attacks life with vigor. She is currently enrolled at Columbus State in the Pathways program. School has been her drive. “When I think about school, I am thinking about my future,” Rose stated when asked what motivates her. Her goal is to graduate Columbus State within the next two years, completing her general education courses. Rose then hopes to continue her education at Columbus College of Art and Design to receive her Bachelor of Arts.  Rose dreams of opening a business for photography and visual editing design.

When people talk about Rose, they speak of  how she treats people with respect, her optimism and her hustle and hunger for life. She is truly a role model and leader among her peers.

Meet Lachelle

Lachelle has three younger sisters and she strives for success to be a role model for them, stop the cycle, and begin a new era for her family. While working hard as a student at Focus Learning Academy, Lachelle also had a part-time job at Kroger and served as a science lab assistant. When May 2019 came, she was unable to participate in graduation, because she still needed to take one more Ohio AIR test. She did not give up. She came back during the summer to take the test and ended up being the first 2019-20 student to complete all graduation requirements. On September 4, 2019, Lachelle officially graduated from Focus Learning Academy with a high school diploma and became the first person in her family to do so.

Lachelle’s story is just beginning: two days after graduating, Lachelle had taken all her placement tests, completed her FAFSA for financial aid, received her recommended classes for Spring 2020, and will begin college in January, just two days after her eighteenth birthday. Lachelle did not wait for someone else, she created the change that she wanted to see in her life.
